Media Statement by Yeo Bee Yin, MP for Puchong and Chairperson of the Parliament Select Committee (PSC) for Women, Children, and Community Development on 20 August 2025 in Parliament Malaysia

1. The tragic death of Zara Qairina has sent shockwaves not only through Sabah but across the entire nation.

2. This incident serves as a crucial wake-up call regarding the prevalence of school bullying and highlights the urgent need for effective measures to address and prevent such behavior among students.

3. The PSC of Women, Children and Community Development committee members have started PSC hearings on school bullying since last week. 

4. Through these hearings, the committee aims to gather insights and testimonies from relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, educators, professionals, and NGOs, in order to identify the root causes of bullying and explore effective prevention strategies.

5. We aim to table a report that outlines specific policy recommendations for the government in combating school bullying next Thursday. 

6. We must do our best to seek justice for Zara Qairina and to ensure such tragedy will not be repeated anywhere in Malaysia in the future. 

7. ⁠The PSC members include: Syerleena binti Abdul Rashid (Bukit Bendera), Datuk Suhaimi bin Nasir (Libaran), Mohamad Shafizan Haji Kepli (Batang Lupar), Rodziah binti Ismail (Ampang), Dato' Siti Zailah binti Mohd Yusoff (Rantau Panjang), Dato' Hajah Mumtaz binti Md Nawi (Tumpat),Dr Halimah binti Ali (Kapar).
